July 16th – Basecamp with People for Bikes – Pacific Northwest eMTB Summit in Bellingham, WA

Recreation Northwest is proud to announce that the People for Bikes Land Manager eMTB Summit is coming to Bellingham, WA on Tuesday, July 16th. 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. 

We will be rounding out the evening with our monthly BASECAMP event for everybody to gather together at the end of the day to continue the conversation of the day, toast each others work and make some new friends. Facebook Event.

About this Event

We hope you can join us for this educational and community-building event geared toward understanding and managing electric mountain bikes.

Logistics:

Where: Bellingham, WA — Lake Padden Park from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. (4882 S Samish Way, Bellingham); and Aslan Brewing Co. from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. (1330 N Forest St., Bellingham)

When: Tuesday, July 16, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., including a eMTB demo at Lake Padden with a variety of eMTBs

Cost: Registration is free but limited to 60 people. Breakfast (at the eMTB demo) and lunch (at Aslan Brewing) will be provided. Scholarships are available to assist land managers with travel costs.

Who: Land managers, trail and conservation advocates, ski area representatives, retailers, manufacturers and riders are warmly invited to participate.

Ride!: We will be offering eMTB demos from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. at Lake Padden.

Objectives:

  • Share information on current e-bike technology, user base and desired user experiences.
  • Discuss existing tools, policies and best management practices to manage e-bike use on a variety of pathways and trails on local, state and federal lands.
  • Foster discussion among stakeholders about the current state of e-bike management, challenges and opportunities, and partnership opportunities.

Agenda:

8:30 – 10:30 a.m.: eMTB demo rides at Lake Padden (4882 S Samish Way, Bellingham) with coffee and breakfast burritos

11 – 11:15 a.m.: Welcome + introductions

11:15 – 11:45 a.m.: Morgan Lommele, Director of State + Local Policy, PeopleForBikes/BPSA. Presentation on industry sales data, rider demographics, consumer info; policies; research and studies; local, state, federal eMTB management

11:45 a.m. – 12 p.m. : Sam Jarrett, Trails Program Manager, Washington Department of Natural Resources. Presentation on DNR’s policies and eMTB pilot project. (tentative)

12 – 12:30 p.m.: Lunch with a presentation on best management practices, design/build resources, and the eMTB land manager guidebook (land managers will receive a copy with registration)

12:30 – 12:45 p.m.: Yvonne Kraus, Executive Director, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. Presentation on Evergreen’s approach to eMTB use .

12:45 – 1 p.m. Phil Edholm, President, CEO, Lookout Pass Ski & Recreation Area. Presentation on Lookout Pass’s e-bike allowance and visitor management.

1 – 1:15 p.m.: Adam Craig, professional mountain biker. Presentation on eMTB use for trail maintenance and advocacy.

1:15 – 3 p.m.: Small group discussion + real time problem solving on case studies, challenges and opportunities related to eMTB management

3 p.m.: Closing thoughts and next steps

3 – 4 p.m.: Happy hour

Todd Elsworth

Todd Elsworth is one of the many “Mossy-haired lunatics roaming the dripping peninsulas”, described in “I’m Here for the Weather” by Tom Robbins. As executive director, he works to fulfill our mission to teach the health benefits of nature, promote outdoor recreation, and steward the places where we play.
